ABSTRACT

A challenge facing a global Top 1000 bank was to grow in an environmental context of increasing competition, subtle socio-political pressures and divided customer loyalties.

After considering various options, data as a means to enhance customer-centricity was seen as an elegant approach to improving competitiveness. While some options had implications for the core banking systems, acting on the outcomes of an analytics and insights process could be leveraged directly by the sales force via a CRM system.

The data, occupying the terabyte scale in Volume, growing at a Velocity approaching 1,000 transactions per second during peak processing, having extensive Variety in various structured and unstructured external data sources, and with processing speed benefiting significantly from being hosted on a Teradata appliance, constituted what the Meta Group defined as “Big Data” in 2001.

Ultimately, the analysis, insights and action resulting from the integration of strategically selected internal and external data sources created a potentially sustainable competitive advantage that drove significant customer-centricity and consequently, financial performance - $100 million in incremental value for the bank within six months.
